After judging, scoring and evaluating the contestants for this year’s South African Car of the year, the winner has finally been announced and it is quite a surprise.
There was stiff competition between this year’s contestants and even some controversy, as many of the judges believed one of the vehicles up for consideration didn’t belong in the competition.
The vehicles under consideration this year were the Ford Figo 1.4 Ambiente, Volkswagen Polo 1.6 Comfortline, Opel Astra 1.4 Enjoy Plus, Honda CR-Z, Citroën DS3 Sport, Hyundai Sonata 2.4 GLS Exec, BMW 530d, Hyundai iX35, Kia Sportage and finally the VW Amarok. It was the Amarok that caused so much controversy as, put plainly, it is not a car.
But enough with the recap, which one of these gets to take the honour in 2011? The winner is…. A tie? That’s right; as it stands right now it is a tie between the BMW 530d and the VW Polo. The BMW was our favorite in the competition so it looks like we were right on the money.
This year’s competition saw a massive revision to the way things are done. In the past there was a complex and undisclosed scoring system however this year the judges were allocated 25 points in total. These points then had to be used on no more than five finalists, but no less than three, as is done in Europe.
This is a very unusual result, the first tie in the 26 year history of the competition, but the result will stand. Congratulations to the winners of the 2011 SA Car of the Year.
