The New Mercedes SLK

car_photo_429346_25

Is this the car that finally gives the Mercedes SL a baby brother? The German company claims that the all-new third-generation SLK roadster is more luxurious, comfortable and fun to drive than ever. But is that really the case? We tried the new model ahead of its UK on-sale date in June.

The new SLK is certainly a more grown-up machine. From the moment you set eyes on it, you get the feeling that it really is a mini SL. It’s much more spacious inside, too, thanks to the fact it’s 31mm longer and 33mm wider than the car it replaces, and the main difference is that there’s a lot more shoulder room.

Ferrari’s 599 finally drops its top

There were murmurs of a convertible version of Ferrari’s 599 GTB doing the rounds at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours event, but apart from a private viewing little was heard about the car since…Now, Ferrari has disclosed the first regarding its biggest drop-top model: the 599 SA APERTA.

Normally going topless for an 80th birthday celebration would be frowned upon, but in the case of the SA APERTA it’s a fitting way to highlight 80 years of Ferrari’s long-time styling partner Pininfarina – the SA prefix pays tribute to the styling firm’s founders: Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina.

The SA APERTA is regarded as a “true roadster” in the very sense of the term, with a removable soft top that is only brought into play when the weather conditions are truly abominable. With regards to styling, the SA APERTA features a more rakishly-angled windscreen and integrated roll-bars flanked by aerodynamic fins.

In addition to lowered suspension, the SA APERTA sits on a comprehensively overhauled version of the 599 GTB’s chassis with extra bracing to ensure optimal structural rigidity.

As with many coupé-to-roadster conversions, the additional bracing does equate to additional weight. However, the SA APERTA shouldn’t be adversely affected thanks to the adoption of the same 493 kW 6,0-litre V12 doing service in the road-and-track special 599 GTO.

The SA APERTA will make its full public debut at this year’s Paris Motor Show. Only 80 examples will be built, as per the Pininfarina anniversary they celebrate, and all of them are already spoken for.

The New 2010 BMW Z4 35i Sdrive

Standing from afar you can’t help but notice its perfect curves, beastly front end and super sexy rear. This is not a super model nor the centre page pull out from a men’s magazine, this is BETTER, quicker, faster and a hell of a lot more comfortable, with a top that comes down in just under 10 seconds.

Then you climb in and the soft, yet sporty, seats which are mounted nice and low, this Z4 feels agile and tight like a track car, but provides luxury gadgets and comfort equal to that of a 7 series. Immediately one feels at ease with the controls and surprisingly spacious cockpit. The new BMW iDrive system is really something that grabs your attention.
