A track day at Killarney Race Circuit

IMG_0839

Its Sunday morning, the sun has just risen and as I wait to be picked up outside my home, I start to feel that familiar feeling of excitement mixed with a slight touch of anxiety and that pre-adrenaline rush that’s waiting like a raging bull behind the coliseum gates, waiting to be released. It’s a feeling that’s difficult to explain, but you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Status Luxury Vehicles have invited the Road and Race team down to Killarney Race Track for an open track day, but more specifically and the reason I’m feeling so excited, is ‘coz we are going to get to play with a couple of SLV’s new toys – a Lotus 7 and a slightly modified JCW Mini Cooper S. So armed with our cameras and a cooler box full of non-alcoholic refreshments, we set off…

Irmscher 7 SELECTRA electric roadster concept revealed in Geneva

226691015899745522

For the 81st Geneva Motor Show, German tuner Irmscher has revealed an electric powered roadster concept based on the Irmscher 7 Turbo Roadster.

The classic Lotus 7 type vehicle uses a 144V DC motor producing 175 kW (238 PS / 235 bhp) and a massive 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque – the highest amount of torque available on the market for an electric car. Battery power comes from Lithium iron phosphate cells (LiFePo).  Advantages of this liquid cooled battery included thousands of cycles of depleting and recharging capacity as well as little power loss at low temperatures.

KTM X-Bow v Lotus 2-Eleven v Ariel Atom v Caterham R500

car_photo_280884_25

Survival instructions, quick start guide. One, kiss your comfort zone goodbye. Two, try not to bid adieu to your arse as well. Three, or your driving licence. Four, ditch the passenger (size-zero road racers are poised on a power/weight knife-edge). Five, don’t kid yourself this is transport, the destination is always the same – your own limits. And six, you will probably fight it, but addiction is a certainty.

On the face of it, the KTM X-Bow understands this version of reality well. It may come from Austria and have a road-car pedigree precisely no inches long, but it is arguably the most extraordinary object with four wheels ever to be seen on a road and, when you switch it on, its cute, rubberised LCD instrument pod that sits between the cowls of the facia asks you a provocative question (‘Ready to race?’), the implication being that even if you aren’t, it is. The irony of this will dawn slowly, but dawn it will.

Right now, having been confronted with issues concerning the will to live by the M25 on the way to collecting the KTM in Chessington, the answer is ‘no’. Conveniently, associate ed Ollie Marriage, who’s already arrived in evo’s long-term M3, agrees to take the first 100-or-so-mile stint towards the evo Triangle in Wales while I tag along in the BMW. In fact, the M3 is just the car I need to realign my sensibilities for the job in hand – a real-world tin- (well, carbon-) top hero with formidable pace and all-round talent that simply isn’t used to having sand kicked in its face. On this leg of the journey, at least, it should keep up. In comfort. With the radio on.

Caterham’s first new car in 17 years

car_photo_417163_25

Surrey firm debuts track-only SP/300.R one-make racer which could spawn hardcore road car.

New Caterhams don’t come along very often, but today’s the day that the Surrey firm will unleash its SP/300.R – its first new car since the 21 arrived in 1994.
The SP/300.R features looks inspired by Audi’s open top Le Mans cars, right down to the LED daytime running lights. However, the polyurethane bodywork is bespoke, and includes a huge, adjustable carbon fibre and aluminium rear wing.
