1995 BMW 530i (E34) V8
After BMW rocked the world with their E28 shaped 5 Series excellence, the successor had a lot to live up too! In all ways, the E34 model 5 Series was superior and a much more accomplished car… BMW took much of the design and technology from the E32 7 Series and then jam packed the best seller 5 series with all the gear, so this was the kind of car you would want to drive for a good solid 5hrs to your holiday house and still, you would arrive feeling fresh ready to light the fire, unpack the boot, get the kids ready for bed and open that bottle of red wine!
Before the iconic 540i, all the 5 series were in-line 6 cylinder motors but somewhere in-between, the boffins in Munich snuck in a 3.0lt V8 which to top it off, came out in a manual gearbox – fantastic news for the purists. The M60B30 V-8 made a solid 163kw and 386nm making it a very drivable saloon that had grunt throughout the rev range. Couple this with Beemers finely weighted chassis and you are cocooned in a luxury car that is surprisingly throwable and sporty for an executive sedan.
The car in question is a fine example which after 25yrs presents extremely well. The exterior shows some signs of age, but nothing like a 25yr car usually does…having just been polished, it’s now shining bright red (yes, no fade here) with all the trimmings popping black. These cars had really good interiors with all the Gizmo’s of a 7 series…it’s a comfy place to sit and spend time in. This interior is in amazing condition, simply put. To drive, its remarkable just how tight this car is. The Gearbox, the linkages, the shifter throw all feels new. Clutch is springy in all the right ways. Honestly, it’s an absolute pleasure to drive with the extra engagement of manual shifting through the gears. Bring back the days of 5 speed manual where the revs actually have time build so you can hear the sing of a V8 run through its burble revs all the way to redline. This all being said, the 225k on the clock is a far cry from what feels real…if one were to check this vehicle without seeing the odo, most would guess half that mileage – It is that good and backed by a comprehensive full service history!
If you looking to add to your collection of saloons or simply looking for a new age classic cruiser, then this vehicle certainly ticks 90% of the boxes we look for.
