The New Mercedes SLK

car_photo_429346_25

Is this the car that finally gives the Mercedes SL a baby brother? The German company claims that the all-new third-generation SLK roadster is more luxurious, comfortable and fun to drive than ever. But is that really the case? We tried the new model ahead of its UK on-sale date in June.

The new SLK is certainly a more grown-up machine. From the moment you set eyes on it, you get the feeling that it really is a mini SL. It’s much more spacious inside, too, thanks to the fact it’s 31mm longer and 33mm wider than the car it replaces, and the main difference is that there’s a lot more shoulder room.

Geneva 2011: Bertone Jaguar B99 concept

car_photo_428563_25

The Bertone Jaguar B99 is one of the stars of the 2011 Geneva motor show. Designed as a concept for a compact Jag (at 4.5m long it’s comparable with a BMW 3-series), it boasts a pretty muscular body, one which combines the looks of a classic XJ saloon with more futuristic influences, such as the lights which echo front and rear (dark red car, right).

The body is constructed with handmade aluminium panels, while the powertrain is hybrid, developed by the firm’s renewable energy research arm, Bertone Energy. There’s an engine for range extension purposes while two electric motors drive the rear wheels. Each one boasts 201bhp, while the car’s maximum output with the engine factored in is a stonking 570bhp, over 60bhp more than Jaguar’s much bigger, supercharged V8-powered XJ Supersports.

The BMW gold rush starts!

2012_bmw_650i_convertible_3_cd_gallery

If you are shopping for a 6-series convertible, please accept our congratulations. According to BMW market research, this is your third or fourth car—not ever, mind you, but currently.

To snag such customers, the Bavarians start with style. Although the previous-generation 6 ushered in an almost iconoclastic era of BMW design, the new 6, styled by Nader Faghihzadeh, returns somewhat to the elegance of the first-generation 6 introduced in 1976. From every angle, the new car looks low and wide and oozes a subtle but unmistakable aggressiveness. The front end features a new fog-light style—executed with LEDs—and a hint of the shark nose that had all but disappeared from BMWs. Thankfully, the 650i uses an evolution of the previous car’s fabric roof instead of a heavy folding hardtop.
