Porsche’s 458 rival revealed

Porsche 458 - 01

Has the 911 had its day? Porsche is working on a new V8-powered, mid-engine supercar designed to sit above the 911 but below the limited run and eye-wateringly expensive 918 Spyder, Auto Express has learned.

Set to become the new performance benchmark for Porsche’s regular range, the all-new model will be aimed squarely at the Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C, and priced accordingly at around £170,000.

1962 Ferrari 250 GTO – Art of the Automobile

Today, GTOs are much admired and expensive – starting out at $25,000,000.

When the rules were announced for the 1962 World Sports Car Championship, it caused quite a stir. Instead of title points going to the open sports cars, they would be awarded to closed Grand Touring machines. Typical of Enzo Ferrari, the wily Italian began with his title-winning 250 Testa Rossa and turned it into a GT…or more specifically a GTO, which stands for Gran Turismo Omologato.

Ferrari FF

The FF is big, but it develops incredible grip, and it feels like a GT that handles like a supercar.

As revolutions go, the FF is a complete reinvention of everything that Ferrari stands for. For starters, there’s the name. FF stands for Ferrari Four, which refers to the four-seater cabin and four-wheel-drive running gear.

OK, so Ferrari has built four-seaters before – such as the 612 Scaglietti, which the FF replaces – it’s built front-engined GT cars, and it’s even had a go at making something with four-wheel drive (a prototype, built in the Eighties), but never has it combined all of this in the same machine.

New McLaren MP4-12C review

car_photo_424378_25

What is it?

The new McLaren MP4-12C, rival to the Ferrari 458 Italia, offspring of Ron Dennis. It costs £168,500, so is cheaper than the Ferrari, too.

Technical highlights?

No roll bars, no LSD, hydraulically supported and connected suspension, adaptive dampers, a little under 600bhp, 1301kg dry, carbon tub, optional ceramic brakes, brake assist, twin turbochargers. More technology than we’ve ever seen in a sports car before.

Here’s an interesting drag race between the McLaren MP4-12C, Ferrari 458 Italia and Porsche 911 Turbo. Hardly a definitive result, however, interesting to watch nonetheless. Most likely shot during the recent MP4-12C media event in Portimao, Portugal.

It’s Forza Ferrari! Meet the FF, Ferrari’s replacement for the 612 Scaglietti. Not only is the newcomer an all-new model, it’s also the company’s most powerful four-seater ever, as well as its first ever four-wheel-drive car.

The FF – an acronym for Ferrari Four (four seats and four-wheel drive) – is described by Ferrari as a car that “represents not so much an evolution as a true revolution”.
