Porsche mulling a new supercar model above the 911 GT2 RS
Model would fill the price gap between the 911 GT2 RS and the much more costly 918 Spyder
Meet the Porsche Cayman S Black Edition
Porsche’s Cayman has never been the performance machine that enthusiasts had hoped for – largely because Porsche never wanted it to cannibalise its own 911.
When the Boxster-based compact mid-engined coupe was first launched in 2005, its 3.4-litre six-cylinder boxer engine made a mere 217kW in Cayman S form but since then it has been raised to 235kW and there’s also the race-inspired Cayman R that makes 243kW.
Peugeot EX1 breaks Nurburgring record
Peugeot’s lightweight concept becomes fastest electric car to lap the Nurburgring
Peugeot’s record-breaking electric car is at it again. Having already smashed straight-line speed records for electric vehicles, the EX1 has now become the fastest electric vehicle to set a lap at the Nurburgring.
The official time was 9:01 with an average speed of 85mph. To put that into context a Porsche 911 GT2 RS can cover the same distance in 7:18 and a Vauxhall Corsa VXR completes a lap in 8:54.
Porsche’s 458 rival revealed
Has the 911 had its day? Porsche is working on a new V8-powered, mid-engine supercar designed to sit above the 911 but below the limited run and eye-wateringly expensive 918 Spyder, Auto Express has learned.
Set to become the new performance benchmark for Porsche’s regular range, the all-new model will be aimed squarely at the Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C, and priced accordingly at around £170,000.
Gemballa Tornado 750 GTS ready to eat your young – and your pocketbook
Gemballa has created some pretty over-the-top Porsche models in the last few years, but the Tornado 750 GTS takes the cake for overall visual impact and completely unnecessary amounts of horsepower.
Using the Cayenne Turbo as a base, Gemballa starts by hacking off an incredible 550+ pounds thanks in part to carbon-fiber bodywork that provides increased downforce and vents air to the front brakes as well as away from the engine compartment.
The turbocharged V8 has been upgraded in typical Gemballa fashion – displacement has been increased to 5.0-liters, upgraded pistons and connecting rods have been added, and a racing turbocharger provides additional boost. The result is 750 horsepower and 775 lb-ft torque, 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.3 seconds, and a top speed of 186 mph. Perhaps even more interesting is that all of this mechanical mayhem can be routed exclusively to the rear wheels if the customer so requests it.
Porsche puts future models on ice
Porsche has announced that it will be putting the production of several future models, such as the ‘Cajun’, Porsche’s small SUV, and a sub-Boxster roadster, on hold while it assesses their viability.
Porsche boss, Matthias Mueller, told Autocar, “We have to clarify how we are to spread out our product programme — below, above, left and right and so on — and we will see”
Porsche unveils 911 Carrera GTS
The Porsche 911 Carrera GTS builds on the virtues of the existing Carrera S model by serving up serious performance in a package that is feasible for everyday use.
At the heart of this model lies a 3,8-litre flat-six engine with direct fuel injection which has been tuned to extract an additional 17 kW over that of the Carrera S – as such, the maximum output now stands at 304 kW.
Porsche has paid attention to the 3,8-litre unit’s cylinder charge and fitted five additional vacuum-controlled tuning flaps to the engine’s resonance intake manifold. The result is said to be a more harmonious switch between optimum power and torque geometry that frees up the maximum 420 N.m of torque from 4 200 r/min – some 2 000 r/min lower than the S. Porsche has also fitted a sports exhaust system with dual pipes with black, nano-coated outer shells.
The Carrera GTS will be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, with the 7-speed PDK transmission an optional extra – both transmissions send power to the rear wheels. Performance-wise, the GTS adds another 3 km/h to the top speed of the S (now 305 km/h) and shaves 0,1 seconds from the 0-100 km/h time (4,6 seconds for the manual car, and as low as 4,2 seconds for the coupé featuring PDK and the Sport Chrono pack).
Visually, both the coupé and Cabriolet GTS models borrow the 44 millimetre wider body from the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 – including widened rear track. A revised body kit, 19-inch centre-locking RS Spyder rims and subtle GTS decals are among the other distinctive exterior features. In the cabin the sports seats feature Alcantara centre panels, as well as a new SportDesign three-spoke steering wheel.
The new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS will have its global debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show on October 2.
