TOP GEAR FESTIVAL 2011
Hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May and featuring cars like Maserati’s MC 12, Lamborghini’s Gallardo Superleggera, Ferrari’s 458 Italia, a Red Bull Racing F1 Car and a Rocket Fuelled dragster you would be silly not to head down to Kyalami Race Track between the 17th and 20th of March 2011 for the Top Gear Festival, powered by BP Ultimate.
David Coulthard, The Stig, Sabine Schmitz as well as a host of other driving talent will also be doing laps, drifting cars and generally showing off their skills to the South African public.
The South African Supercar…the Zagato is nearly here!
It looks like a futuristic Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe, that’s not a bad place to start since these iconic Cobra’s have ruled many a race track and made even more modern supercars scamper away with their tails behind their legs.
We are told by Mike Bruce that this beauty will be sold with exclusive rights by Investment Cars in SA. The vehicle will be manufactured in the armpit of South Africa, P.E and will be available as early as June/July this year.
McLaren MP4-12C review countdown: McLaren F1 drive
Inch by glossy inch, the McLaren F1 emerges from the unassuming box trailer, its fanfare the slow, gritty whirr of the winch. Moments later it’s sitting there in all its understated glory, the greatest supercar the world had ever seen, the best car in the world, circa 1994.
The F1 moved the supercar game on so far that it was over a decade before any other road car got close to its performance, and even though its headline figures have now been bettered, some would argue that as a complete car the F1 is still without peer.
Can it be so, despite the relentless pace of automotive development, despite the advances in materials, tyres and brakes, engine and gearbox technology and electronic control systems? The F1 has aged well aesthetically, which is the reward for not being fashionably styled at the time, but there are clues that it is not a recent design. Notable is the lack of obvious aerodynamic kit, such as a low front splitter and rear diffuser, and the tyres are rather plump, especially at the rear, but even when the car was revealed in the early ’90s these aspects of the F1 pointed up Gordon Murray’s uniquely informed approach to re-setting the supercar benchmarks.
Launch of the McLaren MP4-12C in Cape Town
The McLaren M4-12c
1992 – A big year for many big corporates like Microsoft who release their update to Windows 3.0; Prince Charles and Princess Diana publicly announced their separation and the world received the fastest ever no expenses spared mad super car in the form of the McLaren F1.
Growing up, everything was about wheels, movement and power! Every TV game owned was a racing game, and the love for going as fast as possible was yet just another fun filled challenge amongst friends on skateboards and BMX’s. The untouchable McLaren F1 heightened all this. I remember when McLaren launched the F1 it was the talk amongst all my friends who shared the same passion, “The Formula 1 Road Car” we called it, and with no internet and online searching, the only way to view this master piece was in the latest Car Magazines and limited TV Coverage. An ultra exclusive and expensive supercar for only the purest of the pure wealthy driving enthusiasts.
No wings on this Gull…
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has caused a considerable stir with its blistering performance and gullwing doors. Now the open-top version sees this model getting its wings clipped.
British publication Auto Express has revealed pictures of a lightly-disguised prototype vehicle with a configuration that suggests a roof mechanism comprising an electrically-operated canvas top underpinned by lightweight aluminium ribs – a system similar to that used by the Roadster version of the McLaren-Mercedes SLR.

Jag C-X75 concept set for build?
These days, when a concept car is shown, it’s usually a given that the production car is not too far off.
So it came as a little surprise when Jaguar said it was planning production feasibility studies for its mid-engined
concept shown at the recent Paris auto show.
Automotive News reports that two production levels are under consideration. Each will be independently explored because they each requires different production models. The high-volume model would rely on more automation (with its resultant higher tooling costs), while the low-volume model would require more hand assembly.
Jet-engined four-wheel-drive Jaguar C-X75 at the Paris Motor Show
Bet you weren’t expecting this, right? Jaguar has stolen the Paris motor show with a sensational JET-ENGINED supercar concept. That’s right, JET-ENGINED.
The Jaguar C-X75 uses four electric motors – one at each wheel – powered by Lithium-ion batteries, each producing 195bhp, giving a maximum 780bhp and a heart-busting 1,180lb ft of pulling power.
The purely electric mode gives SuperJag a range of just 68 miles, so engineers have fitted a pair of micro gas-turbines which spin to 80,000rpm and weigh 35kg each, to recharge the batteries (or supplement them), extending the range to a possible 560 miles.
